Lightroom's HDR tool lets you combine two shots of the same scene shot at different exposures to produce a result with equalized lighting. HDR tools have long been available in other photo software, even products from Adobe such as Photoshop Elements.

According to Adobe, the new version renders some effects thousands of percentage points faster: For example, on a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 ($349.00 at Amazon UK), the Exposure adjustment is claimed to be 2,704 percent faster, and the Distort effect is a jaw-dropping 7,931 percent faster. In addition to face detection and tagging, Lightroom CC/6 includes new panorama, HDR (high dynamic range), as well as significant speedups. Adobe uses a smaller-footprint version of the photo file called Smart Preview for transmitting to Web and devices, so bandwidth and storage aren't taxed unnecessarily. But the single purchase option won't include syncing photos to Adobe's mobile apps, such as Lightroom Mobile, Slate, and Voice. Lightroom CC is now available as part of an Adobe Creative Cloud Photography subscription ($9.99 per month) or as the equivalent standalone $149 perpetual-license Lightroom 6 application. One feature that Aperture could long claim over Lightroom was facial recognition, but now Adobe's photo workflow juggernaut has that, too. With Apple's Aperture out of the game, Adobe's Lightroom pro photo-workflow and editing program is even more dominant on Mac and Windows PCs, though there's still plenty of competition from the likes of ACDSee Pro, CyberLink's PhotoDirector, and DxO Optics Pro, Phase One's Capture One, and Corel's AfterShot Pro.

However, Adobe says it is working on getting the software to run on a wider range of devices.

On Android at this point only the Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge and the Google Pixel models are supported. On iOS it works with all devices that are capable of capturing DNG files, such as iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, iPhone SE, or the iPad Pro 9.7. The algorithms of new HDR mode do require powerful hardware and are therefore limited to a relatively small number of devices, though. Members of Adobe's Creative Cloud service get the additional benefit of automatically syncing files and edits with their desktop. The end result is a 16-bit DNG that combines the benefits of the Raw file format and HDR, and can be processed in the same way as the HDR technology in Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.Ĭompared to existing smartphone HDR modes, this method offers better dynamic range, according to Adobe. After capture the files are automatically aligned, merged, de-ghosted, and tone-mapped.
#ADOBE LIGHTROOM 6 HDR UPDATE#
Adobe today released an update for its Lightroom Mobile app for both iOS and Android that comes with an HDR feature that makes use of the Raw capture capability of the latest mobile devices. The new HDR mode first scans the scene to determine the correct exposure range and then captures three DNG files.
